Branding In Hip-Hop

*Warning : Explicit Content...Obviously though, right?

I have created this blog as a way to show the relationship between branding and hip-hop. Branding is more than just a name and logo. A brand has a culture and a background. They symbolize an idea. Rappers, using heavy metaphors, use brands as a way to creatively express their ideas and overall messages.

I've been obsessed with hip-hop since I was 6. Figured I would create something related to it while utilizing my media/advertising background. So enjoy the product placement!

Dr. Dre - Keep Their Heads Ringing

Still, niggaz run up and try to kill at will/ But get popped like a pimple, so call me Clearasil/ I wipe niggaz off the face of the Earth since birth/ I been a bad nigga, now let me tell you what I’m worth

Dr. Dre is making quite some noise these days after his stunning Coachella performance.  I’m sure many fans remember his days at Death Row, where he and Snoop were at the forefront of gangsta rap.  Many rappers couldn’t believe the strong grip West Coast music has at the time, and many were critical of all the attention the West got.  Dre, already having gone through this during his N.W.A. days, isn’t phased by all this.  so if anyone tries to run up on him, they are going to get cleared.  Compare these people to a pimple, and then compare Dre to Clearasil.  Clearasil is a popular brand for facial cleansing.  Dre, the hip-hop clearasil, will then remove competitors of off the “face” of the Earth.

Clearasil, if used regularly, can definitely keep skin smooth and pimple free.  It is only right that Dre asks to be called Clearasil because for twenty plus years he indeed has gotten rid of many of these irritations known as “wack mcs.”
